How a Self-Raising Electric Wheelchair Can Make Everyday Life Easier

How a Self-Raising Electric Wheelchair Can Make Everyday Life Easier

Reaching a higher shelf, using a counter or sitting at a dining table can be difficult when your wheelchair seat stays at one height.

A self-raising electric wheelchair gives you more flexibility. The XSTO M4 and XSTO M4 Pro feature powered seat-height adjustment, helping you position yourself for different everyday activities.

What Is a Self-Raising Electric Wheelchair?

Also called powered seat elevation, this function on the XSTO M4 lets you raise or lower the seat while remaining seated. The XSTO M4 Pro offers the same function, with differences covered in the comparison below.

Both models adjust your seated height; they do not lift you into a standing position.

1. Reach Higher Shelves More Easily

Items on higher shelves may be difficult to reach from a lower sitting position. Raising the seat can bring you closer to them, whether you are choosing groceries or taking a lightweight item from a shelf at home.

This gives you more opportunities to handle small everyday tasks yourself. Keep items within a comfortable reach without leaning far outside the chair.

2. Adjust to Dining Tables and Desks

A table may feel too high when your seat is low. Powered height adjustment lets you raise your sitting position to better suit the surface, whether you are having a meal, reading or working at a desk.

Check that your knees, armrests and controller have enough clearance underneath the table.

3. Interact More Comfortably at Counters

At a shop counter, a higher sitting position may make it easier to see the surface, reach the payment terminal or collect a small item.

It can also bring you closer to eye level when speaking with a standing shop assistant, friend or family member.

4. Get On and Off More Easily

Moving between your wheelchair and a bed or another chair can be more difficult when their heights are very different.

Adjusting the seat can help reduce this height difference, making transfers more manageable for some users. Both models also have adjustable armrests to help with access.

The right setup depends on your balance, strength and transfer method. Some users will still need caregiver assistance or transfer equipment.

More Than Seat Raising: Automatic Balance on Slopes

When travelling up or down a slope, the XSTO M4 and XSTO M4 Pro automatically adjust the seat angle to compensate for the incline. This helps keep your sitting position level instead of tilting with the wheelchair frame.

This is different from adjusting the seat tilt for comfort. Seat tilt lets you change your resting position, while self-balancing responds automatically to the slope during travel.

Self-balancing does not guarantee that the wheelchair cannot tip. Follow the model's slope limits and instructions for seat height and permitted driving positions.

Other Features That Help With Everyday Use

The XSTO M4 and XSTO M4 Pro also include:

  • Joystick control – Manage steering and speed using one hand, with automatic braking when the joystick is released.
  • Omni-directional front wheels – Help with turning and manoeuvring around furniture and tighter indoor spaces.
  • App control – Allows remote operation and basic manoeuvring when positioning the chair.
  • Powered folding and a modular frame – Help prepare the wheelchair for storage or transport. Check the weight of each part and the available loading space.

XSTO M4 Pro: What’s Upgraded?
